Prince Izjaslav Ingvarevych of Dorogobuzh

Biography

Prince Izjaslav Ingvarevych of Dorogobuzh was a medieval Rus' prince and member of the Rurikid dynasty who lived during the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. He was a son of Ingvar Yaroslavich and belonged to the extensive Rurikid family that ruled numerous principalities throughout the lands of Kievan Rus'.

Izjaslav was associated with Dorogobuzh and lived during a period when the lands of Rus' were divided among numerous principalities governed by different branches of the Rurikid dynasty. Political alliances, territorial disputes, and military conflicts between related princes characterized much of this period.

In 1223, the Rus' principalities faced one of their earliest major encounters with the expanding Mongol forces. A coalition of Rus' princes and their Cuman allies confronted a Mongol army at the Battle of the Kalka River. The battle ended in a devastating defeat for the Rus' coalition and became an important precursor to the much larger Mongol invasion of Rus' that followed in the thirteenth century.

Izjaslav died in 1223 and is associated with the events surrounding the Battle of the Kalka River. His life belongs to the final decades of Kievan Rus' before the Mongol invasions dramatically transformed the political landscape of Eastern Europe.
