Biography

Philippa of Hainault (c. 1310/1315 – 15 August 1369) was Queen of England as the wife of King Edward III and one of the most prominent English queens of the fourteenth century. She was the daughter of William I, Count of Hainaut, and Joan of Valois.

Philippa was born in the County of Hainaut in the Low Countries. Her marriage to Edward III formed part of an important political alliance between England and Hainaut. The couple married at York Minster in January 1328, shortly after Edward had become king. Philippa was crowned Queen of England at Westminster Abbey on 4 March 1330.

Philippa and Edward had a long marriage and a large family. Their children included Edward the Black Prince, Lionel of Antwerp, John of Gaunt, Edmund of Langley, and Thomas of Woodstock. Through their children, Philippa and Edward became ancestors of several competing branches of the Plantagenet dynasty, whose rival claims would later play a central role in the Wars of the Roses.

Philippa accompanied Edward on a number of his travels and was admired by contemporary chroniclers for her compassion and generosity. One of the most famous stories associated with her concerns the Burghers of Calais in 1347. According to the chronicler Jean Froissart, Philippa pleaded with Edward to spare six prominent citizens of Calais who had offered themselves to the king following the city's surrender.

She also exercised political responsibilities during Edward's absences. In 1346, while the king was campaigning in France, Philippa remained in England during the Scottish invasion that culminated in the Battle of Neville's Cross, where King David II of Scotland was captured.

Philippa died at Windsor Castle on 15 August 1369 and was buried in Westminster Abbey. Edward III was later buried beside her following his death in 1377.

Her descendants profoundly shaped English and European history. Through her son John of Gaunt, Philippa was the grandmother of King Henry IV and an ancestor of the Lancastrian and Tudor royal dynasties. Through her other children, her descendants also became central figures in the dynastic struggles that transformed England during the later Middle Ages.
