King Charles III
Biography
King Charles III was born Charles Philip Arthur George on November 14, 1948, at Buckingham Palace in London, England. He is the eldest child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Charles became heir to the British throne in 1952 when his mother became queen following the death of King George VI. From an early age, he was prepared for the responsibilities of one day becoming king.
Charles received his education at several schools, including Gordonstoun in Scotland and Geelong Grammar School in Australia, before attending Trinity College at the University of Cambridge. In 1970, he became the first heir to the British throne to earn a university degree.
After completing his education, Charles served in both the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy. He trained as a pilot and later commanded the naval vessel HMS Bronington. His military service helped prepare him for many of the ceremonial and leadership responsibilities he would later undertake as monarch.
In 1981, Charles married Lady Diana Spencer in a wedding watched by millions of people around the world. They had two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. Although the marriage ended in divorce in 1996, Charles remained actively involved in his sons' lives. In 2005, he married Camilla Parker Bowles, who became Queen Camilla when Charles became king.
For more than seventy years, Charles carried out official duties as Prince of Wales, making him the longest-serving heir apparent in British history. During that time, he represented the Royal Family on thousands of visits throughout the United Kingdom and around the world. He also became well known for his interest in protecting the environment, preserving historic buildings, promoting sustainable agriculture, and supporting young people through charitable organizations. In 1976, he founded The King's Trust, which has helped more than one million young people gain education, training, and employment opportunities.
King Charles III became monarch on September 8, 2022, immediately following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. His coronation took place at Westminster Abbey on May 6, 2023, continuing a tradition that dates back nearly one thousand years. As king, he serves as the constitutional monarch of the United Kingdom and Head of the Commonwealth, carrying out official duties while representing the nation at home and abroad.
Today, King Charles III continues to lead the monarchy with a strong commitment to public service, environmental conservation, charitable work, and preserving Britain's history and traditions. His reign marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the British Royal Family while continuing many of the values established during the reign of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
