Biography

King Harold II of England (c. 1022 – 14 October 1066), also known as Harold Godwinson, was the last crowned Anglo-Saxon king of England. He was the son of Godwin, Earl of Wessex, and Gytha Thorkelsdóttir, and became one of the most powerful nobles in England during the reign of Edward the Confessor.

Following Edward’s death in January 1066, Harold was chosen as king and crowned shortly afterward. His brief reign was dominated by rival claims to the English throne. In September 1066, Harold defeated an invading Norwegian army led by King Harald Hardrada at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. Only weeks later, he marched south to confront William, Duke of Normandy.

Harold was killed on 14 October 1066 at the Battle of Hastings, where his army was defeated by William’s Norman forces. His death marked a decisive turning point in English history and paved the way for the Norman Conquest of England under William the Conqueror.
