Overview
King Ladislaus I of Hungary (c. 1040–1095) was one of the greatest monarchs of medieval Hungary and a member of the House of Árpád. He ruled from 1077 until his death and is remembered as a warrior king, lawgiver, and defender of Christianity. His reign strengthened the Kingdom of Hungary, expanded its influence into Croatia, and established legal reforms that shaped Hungarian society for centuries.
Following his death, Ladislaus became one of Hungary's most revered rulers. In 1192 he was canonized by Pope Celestine III and has since been honored as Saint Ladislaus.
Biography
Born around 1040 while his father Béla lived in exile in Poland, Ladislaus inherited royal blood from both the Hungarian House of Árpád and the Polish Piast dynasty. After Béla I became King of Hungary, Ladislaus distinguished himself as a military commander and gained the respect of both the nobility and the Church.
In 1077 he became King of Hungary after the death of King Géza I. Throughout his reign he defended Hungary from foreign invasions, strengthened royal authority, promoted Christianity, and expanded the kingdom into Croatia.
Ladislaus was celebrated for his courage, fairness, and deep religious faith. Medieval chronicles describe him as the ideal Christian king whose leadership brought stability to the kingdom during a period of political uncertainty.
Today he remains one of Hungary's national heroes and one of the most celebrated members of the House of Árpád.
